This was my first Nora Roberts book, surprisingly! It’s set near my hometown in Asheville, and it’s a romantic suspense so I had to give it a go! The suspense element got pretty emotional and dark as it deals with many instances of abuse.
To those on the outside, the Bigelows look like the perfect family. The father, Graham, is a well respected doctor, who comes home from his grueling job to his beautiful wife Eliza who caters to his every need. They have two smart and cute young kids, Zane and Britt. But on the inside, Zane and Britt are stuck inside their own personal hell that no one knows about. Graham abuses their mother constantly, until one night he focuses his wrath on to Zane. Shortly after this brutal beating, the truth is exposed.
When Zane is old enough to leave for college, he doesn’t come back for years. When he finally decides to move back to his hometown and continue practicing law, he meets newcomer Darby who also has a troubled past she’s trying to heal from.
I really enjoyed the setting and many of the characters. The relationships and friendships were wonderful. At times this book was drawn out and didn’t serve to further the story so I was a little annoyed at having to skim some parts but overall this was a great novel.
